This bus was built for Southdown as No 288 with a Park Royal body part of a batch numbered 266-292 in 1940 but due to travel restrictions on the south coast they were deemed surplus to requirements and diverted to other companies, Crosville receiving 16 the others went to Western Welsh 7 and Cumberland 4, none ever ran for Southdown. The fleet numbers were used after the war the first of their Leyland PD1’s.

My father worked for A E C Crossley from 1930 after he left the army, his colonel was a Crossley. He informed me years ago that he test drove busses and trucks until the start of the Second World War his name was Cecil Louis Fidler.

This lovely shot is taken at the upper end of Gervis Place, I would say, or possibly opposite the Pavilion. The ‘Christchurch’ routes all departed from this end of the Square

I have a photo of myself driving bus no 188 in November 1973 which was a Daimler. also a photo of bus no 213 a Leyland Atlantean. It was my last day as a driver so had some photos taken as a keepsake if anyone would like a copy please forward e.mail address.
