Road Service Licence No’s: BH101/104, /105, /125, /126, /127.
Due to the complexity and large number of services in this group it will be described under each licence number, relating transfers on and off as they occur and further development of each of these transfers can be followed on the new licence number. Each licence will be described chronologically.
In October 1957, a provisional Road Service Licence, BH101/104, was granted to the Corporation and was followed in due course by the substantive licence BH101/105. The licences covered a workers service between the Bilton Grange estate and the developing industrial estate at Somerden Road, which was off Hedon Road, near to King George Dock. It was given the route number 96 in the workers series, which was then in use. It was a full year before the licence gained another service and the new one was a general service linking east and west Hull via the outer ring road, the eastern end virtually superimposed on the existing 96, but the terminus was situated at the Hedon Road and Marfleet Avenue junction, rather than Somerden Road. At the western end, the terminus was situated at the junction of Hessle Road and North Road. Another first for the Corporation was the use of different route numbers for each direction, thus west to east was route number 1 and east to west was route number 2 and it was to be from this service that the majority of variations were to be derived. The following year, 1959, another works service was added to the licence, this being numbered 97. It commenced at Longhill Estate and travelled via Shannon Road and Holderness Road to Diadem Grove from where it travelled to the Grange Road terminus of the 96 and both used the same route to Somerden Road effectively doubling the capacity of the route. Thus at the end of the decade the licence held three services thus:-
1 | Gipsyville to Marfleet /2 Marfleet to Gipsyville |
96 | Bilton Grange to Somerden Road |
97 | Longhill to Somerden Road |
By 1963, new buses being delivered to Hull Corporation were now equipped with three track number blinds in place of the two-track used previously. This enabled more distinctions to be used in the route numbering, enabling short workings extras and the like to show the same basic route number but with a numerical prefix to distinguish between services. Also as a consequence the Corporation also used several three figure route numbers which did not fall into the above category, and almost all of them were on this licence.
Route numbers 1 and 2 were altered in 1963 to become 101 and 102, maintaining the eastbound and westbound distinction, whilst the timetable of October that year showed two further routes numbered 101/102. Their eastern termini were situated at the Greatfield estate, but had western termini situated at the junction of Cottingham Road and Ferens Avenue, which served Hull University and the other was at Hotham Road and served the new Hull Grammar School. Route numbers were later altered to 201/202 and 301/302 respectively. In actual fact the university service had actually commenced in 1959 under route numbers 1/2 and 101/102, but it was not advertised in the timetable until 1963. In April 1964, the highest route numbers ever to be used by the corporation 901 and 902 were used for a service between Marfleet Lane and Longhill Estate.
Under a revised numbering scheme introduced in 1966, all school services were to be prefixed with the number ‘8’ and this was to be used from the start of the new school year in September. It was clear that the services outlined above did not easily fit into this plan, therefore the numbers 801 to 806 were used for services on this licence. Incidentally 800 was used for a service between Stoneferry and the David Lister High School as previously noted. Of the existing routes 901/2 became 801, 201/2 became 802 and 301/2 became 803, maintaining a tenuous link to the previous numbers. For the rest of the series, three new services were commenced, these being 804; Greatfield estate to Bilton Grange for St Bede’s School, 805; Longhill estate to St Bede’s School and 806 was a service between Ferens Avenue and Pickering Road for the Kingston High School. Also at this point on the main route, the westbound 102 number was discontinued, 101 being used for both directions of travel. The licence also acquired a workers service between Greenwood Avenue and Somerden Road which was covered by most of the 101 route, route number 9 was given to the service. The outer terminus of the 9, 96 and 97 were amended in 1966 to terminate in Somerden Road, rather than at the Hedon Road junction used hitherto.
The use of a numerical prefix was beginning to be rather clumsy and somewhat misleading, so in 1967 the system was replaced by the use of an alphabetical suffix, nine letters, A, B, C, D, E, F, S, W and X were used. The use of the new letters kept the new blinds the same length as the numerical ones in use previously. All but one of the services on Licence BH101/105 was affected by this change and a full list of changes at this time was:-
8 | Longhill to Marfleet Lane, St Richard’s School | old 801 |
9 | York Road - Somerden Road unchanged number
but extended to Inglemire Lane via Orchard Park. |
8A | Longhill - St Bede’s School | old 805 |
10 | Gipsyville - Marfleet | old 101 |
10C | Greatfield - Hotham Road | old 802 extended to Kelvin Hall |
10S | Greatfield - Ferens Avenue | old 803 cut back to Chanterlands Avenue |
24S | Ferens Avenue - Kingston High School | old 806 |
All of these were shown in the timetable for April 1967, it should be noted also, that the Bilton Grange to St Bede’s 804 route number was discontinued as it was covered by the 8A (ex 805). The next timetable in October showed further changes as follows:
7 | Longhill - Somerden Road | old 97 |
7A | Bilton Grange - Somerden Road | old 96 |
11 | Greatfield - Kelvin Hall | ex 10C originally 803 |
In addition to the changes noted above, the April timetable showed further variants of the 10 route as follows:
10B | Meadowbank Road - Preston Road |
10D | Walton Street - Saltshouse Road |
10E | Chanterlands Avenue North - Cavendish Road |
10F | Gipsyville or Marfleet - Beverley High Road |
10W | Gipsyville - Somerden Road |
Also listed were the following new services:
8C | Sutton - St Bede’s School |
24 | Gipsyville - Sutton |
24A | Gipsyville - Ferens Avenue |
5 | Longhill - Marfleet - Craven Street |
Of the above the 5 duplicated the 8 route to Marfleet from where it headed westwards serving the eastern docks and other industrial sites in the area. It terminated at Craven Street, where Messrs. Hollis Brothers, the timber importers and Merchants premises were situated.
All the nine services noted above were introduced in April, whilst the October timetable in addition to the renumbering of the three routes already noted gave another four new routes as under:
10C | Greatfield - Hall Road |
11S | Greatfield - Hall Road |
28 | Greatfield - Hall Road |
29 | Greatfield - Orchard Park Schools |
The 28 and 29 were virtually identical to the 10C and 11S but were routed via Maybury Road and Cottingham Road rather than the ring road.
By now the licence was quite bulky, consisting of no less than twenty two routes, which was the largest number of routes on any one licence at any one time. The route numbers were 5, 7, 7A, 8, 8A, 8C, 9, 10, 10B, 10C, 10D, 10E, 10F, 10S, 10W, 11, 11S, 24, 24A, 24S, 28 and 29. In order to “tidy up” the licence, three new licences were granted in June 1968. Eight of the above services were transferred from BH101/105 to the new licences which were BH101/125, /126 and /127. The first received routes 28 and 29, whilst BH101/126 received 8, 8A and 8C. The final licence BH101/127 received 5, 7, and 7A. Remaining on BH101/105 were 9, 10, 10B, 10C, 10D, 10E, 10F, 10S, 10W, 11, 11S, 24, 24A, and 24S.
In the timetable dated October 1968, the 10 group saw two new variants 10A Council Avenue to Marfleet and 10C Greenwood Avenue to Saltshouse Road, the latter replaced the earlier Greatfield to Hall Road service; the eastern terminus of the 10D now cut back to the Holderness Road and Ings Road junction from Saltshouse Road, whilst the 10E was cut back from Cavendish Road to Leads Road.
With the development of the housing estate at Bransholme, the Corporation commenced a new works service from Dulverton Close to Somerden Road under the route number 9A. There were also two new school services, 11E between Greatfield and the Orchard Park Schools and 24B Gipsyville to St Mary’s High School in Cranbrook Avenue. All three services were noted in the timetable dated March 1969. The next issue in September showed a new 10S which in fact denoted two services which differed in each direction. In the eastbound direction the service ran between Gipsyville and Chanterlands Avenue North, westbound it denoted a service between Marfleet and Holderness Road/Ings Road, the original 10S route which had originally been the 201/2 was discontinued. It was at this time also, that the 24 group was transferred from BH101/105 to BH101/124. As a result of this transfer, BH101/105 now consisted of fourteen routes in the 9, 10 and 11 groups.
March 1970 saw the Bransholme terminus of the 9A move from Dulverton Close to Bodmin Road this necessitated the re-routing of the service via the southern end of Bude Road, Tiverton Road and the northern end of Bodmin Road. In the next issue of the timetable issued in September, there was another works service commencing at Bodmin road. This was numbered 9B and duplicated the 9A to Hedon Road, where it followed the route of the 5 to Ferries Street. In 1971 the two Bransholme services were renumbered, the 9A becoming 3 and the 9B becoming 8C. At the same time the 3 (9A) was joined by a news service, the 3A which commenced from Honiton Road and served the Noddle Hill area of Bransholme before joining the 3 route. The renumbering of the 9B to 8E is somewhat obscure as the remainder of the 8 group was now on licence BH101/126. However, it did not remain so numbered for long as in March 1972, it was transferred to BH101/127 also, thus re-uniting the erstwhile 9A and 9B routes, which were now numbered 3 and 5A! Meanwhile on the main licence, the 10E was extended from Leads Road and now terminated at Somerden Road.
A “full house” was achieved by the 10 group in March 1973, when route 10X was introduced for a service between the Eastern Cemetery on Preston Road and Beverley High Road. This now gave the 10 group all possible alphabetical suffixes as well as plain 10. The 10X however was always listed from the outset, with the 11 group and was later numbered into that series. In September of 1974, there was a new service introduced in the 11 group which operated between Sutton Fields and Kelvin Hall, it was numbered 11B; the following May it was re-routed at the western end to follow the 9 route and was accordingly renumbered 9B. Also in May the 10C service was discontinued thus breaking the “full house”. July 1976 saw the 10X referred to above renumbered into the 11 group taking the vacant 11B number. The 11S was extended to Danepark Road in Orchard Park from Thorpepark Road and the 10S was altered to run between Somerden Road and Pickering Road for the Kingston High School. In addition, the 9 group was extended at the western end to commence from Hall Road and the Cottingham Road junction. Continuing with the 9 group, in May 1978, a new sports service from Hall Road to Craven Park commenced under the route number 9F. Also in May 1978, the 10 group was extensively altered with three new services and one discontinued. New were 10A: Marfleet to Guildhall; 10B: Gipsyville or Somerden Road to Meadowbank Road; 10S: Marfleet to Kingston High School; the 10D variant was discontinued.
The 1980 rationalisation of Bransholme services affected licence BH101/105 as the 10 group was again revised and the 11 group were renumbered. With the 10 group the original 10, 10A and 10B were all replaced by new services, the 10S and 10W were both altered and the 10D and 10X were transfers from licence BH101/19, which had all other services discontinued except for the 47 and 47A which, due to its routing via North Bridge instead of Drypool, became 10B and 10X. The other transfer was from BH101/126 and was none other than the 7 which now was 10D. This was, of course, the 97 which had commenced on BH101/105 in 1959, it had returned by way of BH101/127 and BH101/126. To summarise, the 10 group now consisted of the following services:
10 | Outer City Circular: Previous 10 extended at both ends to the Coach Station |
10A | As above by running via the Bransholme District Centre |
10B | Brook Street to Longhill estate (ex 47: BH101/19) |
10D | Longhill estate to Marfleet (ex 7: BH101/126) |
10E | Brook Street to Chanterlands Avenue North |
10F | Coach Station to Beverley High Road |
10S | Brook Street to Kingston High School |
10W | Brook Street to Council Avenue or Coach Station to Somerden Road |
10X | Brook Street to Somerden Road (ex 47A: BH101/19) |
It is worth noting that services that commenced at Brook Street ran anti-clockwise, whilst those commencing at the Coach Station ran clockwise, the 10/10A, of course, ran in both directions. School services were by this being numbered in a special series which commenced at 83, which followed the highest normal service, 82, the Wymersley Road route. The former 11 group service were renumbered into the school series as 97 (11), 97B (11B) and 98 (11S). All these changes took place in June 1980. The following January the 10 and 10A services exchanged numbers as most journeys now travelled via Bransholme.
In May 1983, the 97 and 98 both commenced their westwards journeys from Marfleet rather than Greatfield. Sports services were amended at this point using the suffix letters C, F and X. Services now used only these which signified C for Craven Park (Hull Kingston Rovers RUFC), F for the Boulevard (Hull RLFC) and X for Boothferry Park (Hull City AFC). This scheme did not affect normal services, which retained the normal suffix letter meanings. As a consequence the 9F became 9C. The licence now consisted of fifteen services 9, 9B, 9C, 10, 10A, 10B, 10D, 10E, 10F, 10S, 10W, 10X, 97, 97B and 98.
In 1984 the 10D was extended at both ends. The Longhill terminus was abandoned and it now commenced at Gipsyville, travelling the full route to Marfleet, from where it was extended to Somerden Road. In December of the same year the 10W service was discontinued.
The outer circle services were radically revised in July 1985. Licence BH101/87, upon which the first outer city circle, the 71C, had been, was surrendered and three services, the 71X Greenwood Avenue to Boothferry Park, 75 Coach Station to Willerby Road and 70W Coach Station to Willerby Road via Council Avenue, were transferred to BH101/105. Whilst, not actually transferred, the 11 from BH101/87 was the basis of an outer circle route which was added to BH101/10.
The new circle was numbered 11 and 12. This group ran via Hessle Road, Boulevard and Goulton Street as opposed to Anlaby Road and St George’s Road as did the 71C, whilst the 11S ran via County Road instead of Chanterlands Avenue as did the 10/12 group. Other than this, all three groups were similar. It is worth noting that the entire 11 group ran clockwise, that is west Hull to east Hull, whilst the 12 group, except for the 12 and 12F ran anti-clockwise. Of existing routes, the 10A, 10E and 10S were discontinued, the 10A/10S being replaced by new services. The 9, 9B, 9C, 10, 10B, 10D, 10F, 10X, 97, 97B and 98 were unchanged. Services new to the licence were:
10A | Gipsyville - Bilton ASDA Store | Replacement route |
10S | St Mary’s High School - Council Avenue | Replacement route |
11 | Outer circle | |
11B | Coach Station - Council Avenue
11F | Coach Station - Sutton Road
11S | Coach Station - St Mary’s High School | (ex 99, BH101/124) |
11W | Coach Station - Somerden Road
11X | Outer Circle via Sutton Fields
12 | Coach Station - Sutton Road | (both directions) |
12A | Longhill - Coach Station
12F | Coach Station - Sutton Road | (clockwise only) |
12S | St Mary’s High School - Coach Station
12W | Sutton Road - Council Avenue
12X | Somerden Road - Coach Station
71X | Greenwood Avenue - Boothferry Park | (ex BH101/87) |
75 | Coach Station - Willerby Road | (ex BH101/87) |
75W | Coach Station - Willerby Road via Council Avenue | (ex BH101/87) |
97E | Somerden Road - Bricknell Avenue |
This now made a total of twenty nine different (sic) routes held on the licence. All the services ran as above until July 1986, when the deregulation network was introduced and it was largely based on existing 10/11/12 services. Different route numbers were used for each direction of travel and there were two differing routes for peak hour services and off peak services. The former were based on the 11 group and were numbered 25/26, whilst the latter were based on the 10 group and were numbered 23/24. Variants of the main route were not always distinguished by a suffix letter and a full list of services was as under:
23 | Outer Circle | (Clockwise) |
24 | Outer Circle | (Anti-Clockwise) |
Bransholme to Coach Station
25 | Outer Circle |
(Clockwise) |
Coach Station to Somerden Road | (basically the old 11W)
Holwell Road to Coach Station | (basically the old 9B)
25A | Outer Circle via Goulton Street
25W | Hall Road - Dansom Lane
26 | Outer Circle |
(Anti-Clockwise) |
Cheltenham Avenue to Coach Station
Coach Station to Somerden Road | (basically the old 10D)
Longhill to Coach Station | (basically the old 10B)
26W | Dansom Lane to Coach Station |
In addition to the above services, service 75 was retained but on outward journeys only. It was extended beyond Willerby Road to Greenwood Avenue. All other existing services were discontinued and only the 23-26 and 75 continued until deregulation took place in October 1986 when licence BH101/105 was finally surrendered.
Upon commencement of the new licence in June 1968, the licence held three services 28, 28A and 28W, the first and last were transferred from BH101/105 while the second was a new route. The details were as under:
28 | Greatfield estate to Kelvin Hall, this had previously been 29 |
28A | Greatfield estate to Kelvin Hall, a new route |
28W | Greatfield estate to Ferens Avenue, this had previously been 28 |
In March 1969, the 28W service was discontinued and a new service was the 28S which ran between Clough Road and Kelvin Hall, this route also ceased in 1970 and the 28A ceased operation in March 1972. The 28S re-commenced at this point, but now terminated at the Wyke Junior School.
In September 1973 the eastern end of the 28 was altered and now no longer ran from the Greatfield estate but commenced at Grange Road running via Preston Road, Southcoates Lane and Summergangs Road. Also new at this time was the 28A which ran between Chanterlands Avenue and Marfleet, this had previously been the 25 which had been transferred from BH101/124.
Another 28W service commenced in May 1975, it ran between Somerden Road and Chapman Street (Reckitt’s). School service 95 also commenced at this time which ran between Compass Road on the Trafalgar estate and Kelvin Hall. In the September, the 28A was discontinued, but it had re-commenced by July 1976.
The 94 school service which ran between Bransholme North and Bodmin Road was shown as being added to the licence in May 1977. If this is correct, then the reasoning is very unclear as no other route on the licence at that point ran into Bransholme at all. In September 1978 it was extended from Bodmin Road to service the twin St Oswald’s and St Anne’s Schools in Sutton Park. The route was transferred to licence BH101/131 in the rationalisation of Bransholme services in June 1980.
In May 1977, the eastern terminus of the 28S was altered to the junction of Chamberlain Road and Rockford Avenue and the following May it changed again to the junction of Holderness Road/Summergangs Road junction, co-incident with this, the 28W was also discontinued.
It was not until May 1982 that any further alterations took place on the licence by which time services 28, 28A, 28S and 95 were the only services in operation. It was one the last one that an extension occurred. Inbound journeys now began at Downfield Avenue on the new Ings Bridge estate, which was situated east of Beverley High Road just within the city boundary. The service ran from there to the Trafalgar estate to the south where it regained its normal route. On outward runs, however, it ran direct to Ings Bridge and terminated at Compass Road. This avoided having to cross Beverley High Road an extra two times. After this, all services remained unchanged until July 1986, when all four services were discontinued and the licence was surrendered.
This licence was the second ‘overflow’ licence from BH101/105 and consisted of five services as under:
8 | Longhill estate to St Richard’s Junior School |
8A | Longhill estate to St Bede’s School |
8B | Greatfield estate to St Bede’s School |
8C | Sutton to St Bede’s School |
8D | Bransholme to St Richard’s Junior School |
The 8B and 8D were new services but the other three were transferred from BH101/105 and all five commenced operating from this licence in June 1968. Two years after, in March 1970, the 7 and 7A services to Somerden Road were also transferred from BH101/127. The Bransholme terminus was at Dulverton Close at the start, as were other services to the estate, but in March 1970, it was amended to the northern end of Bodmin Road. Co-incident with this, another schools service commenced from Bodmin Road to the St Bede’s School in Bilton Grange, this was numbered 8E.
For some undetermined reason, in October 1971, the 7A was renumbered 7B, otherwise being unchanged. The 8 group underwent drastic changes, the 8 was renumbered 5S and transferred to BH101/127, the 8A and 8E services were discontinued but a new group were added to the remaining 8B, 8C, 8D services. There were:
8 | Bodmin Road to St Richard’s Junior School (previously 8D) |
8A | Bodmin Road to Holderness Road Astoria Bingo Hall |
8F | Noddle Hill Way to St Richard’s Junior School |
In March, the 8 return journeys to Bransholme commenced from Somerden Road and the route was renumbered 8S. Incidentally, the termini of this and the 8D which was now renumbered 8, were at the same points, but the 8 (8D) omitted the section of route through the Ings estate. The Astoria Bingo service was discontinued, the 8F was renumbered 8A and the Bransholme terminus was extended through Noddle Hill to commence at Honiton Road. At this point the licence consisted of the following services: 7, 7B, 8 (ex 8D), 8A (ex 8F), 8B, 8C, 8D and 8S. In September 1972, the entire 8 group was transferred to licence BH101/127, and service 7B, the original 96 of 1957, was discontinued, leaving only service 7 (Longhill to Somerden Road, the 97 of 1958) on the licence. It remained alone until May 1975 when a new 7A was introduced. It used the same termini as the 7 but travelled via Bilton Grange and Greatfield estates. The following September, service 7W was introduced, which officially recognised a route running between Longhill estate and Saltend. Previously, it had been run as a hybrid of services 7 and 45 on their respective licences. In the rationalisation which took place in June 1980, both the 7A and 7W were withdrawn and the 7 returned to BH101/105 as route 10D. There being no other services on the licence, it was duly surrendered.
The final overflow licence of June 1968 was BH101/127 and three routes were transferred from BH101/105 to it as under:
5 | Longhill estate to Craven Street |
7 | Longhill estate to Somerden Road |
7A | Bilton Grange estate to Somerden Road. |
The latter two did not remain on the licence for very long as in March 1970 they were transferred to BH101/126 as noted above. However, in the interval, the 5 was extended from Craven Street to run through to the Coach Station in October 1968. At this point, service 4 was added which ran between Saltshouse Road and Craven Street. As noted above, in October 1971 service 5S arrived from BH101/126, this was the Longhill estate to St Richard’s School service which had been route number 8 on BH101/126. A works service 5W was also added. This ran between the Longhill estate and the Imperial Typewriter factory on Hedon Road. The 5A was the number given to the Bodmin Road the Ferries Street service 8E which was transferred from BH101/105 also.
In September of the same year, the 3 and 3A services from Bodmin Road (3) or Honiton Road (3A) to Somerden Road were transferred in from BH101/105, and a new service complementing the 4 commenced running from Honiton Road to the Coach Station as service 4A. As noted under BH101/126, the entire 8 group was transferred to this licence, this consisted of the following:
8 | Bodmin Road to St Richard’s Junior School |
8A | Honiton Road to St Richard’s Junior School |
8B | Greatfield to St Bede’s School |
8C | Sutton to St Bede’s School |
8S | Bodmin Road to St Richard’s Junior School via Ings estate |
Thus the licence now consisted of 3, 3A, 4, 4A, 5, 5A, 5S, 5W, 7, 7A, 8, 8A, 8B, 8C and 8S, a total of fifteen services.
In May 1973 services 4, 4A and 5 were amended as much as they now ran from the city centre rather than to it as previously, and accordingly the city centre terminus was now situated at Brook Street. The following September, the northern end of the 4A was extended to serve the Sutton Park estate. In May 1974 the 5A was reversed as above now commencing at Brook Street, and services 4A, 5S and 5W ceased operating. September of 1974 saw the commencement of a new 4A service which ran between Brook Street and Bodmin Road via Noddle Hill Way and Honiton Road. Both this and the 4 were transferred to BH101/141 in May 1975 and the 3 and 3A went to BH101/140 at the same time. Service 5 was also discontinued. A new 5 was commenced in July of 1976 running between Brook Street and Bodmin Road via Greatfield estate and Bilton Grange estate, but both this and the 5A were withdrawn in May 1978.
To return to the 8 group, the 8B was discontinued in 1974 and after this point there were few developments, indeed it was May 1977 before any new services were added and this was a new 8B which ran between Bransholme North and Somerden Road. However, a year later, five new services were added to the group, these being 8C, 8D, 8E, 8F and 8W. The existing 8C was renumbered 8S and the 8, 8A, 8B and 8S remained unaltered thus there were now ten services in the group.
8 | Bodmin Road to Preston Road | (or from Somerden Road) |
8A | Honiton Road to Presto Road | (or from Somerden Road) |
8B | North Bransholme to Preston Road | (or from Somerden Road) |
8C | Hull Royal Infirmary, Sutton to North Bransholme | (New) |
8D | North Bransholme to Coach Station | (New) |
8E | Bodmin Road to Coach Station | (New) |
8F | Brook Street to Bodmin Road | (New) |
8S | St Bede’s School to Bodmin Road via Ings estate
8S | Ings Road to St Bede’s School via Ings estate | (Previously 8C) |
8W | Trinity Grove to Bodmin Road | (New) |
This latter service was to serve the works of the Metal Box Company who were situated on Preston Road. The above services remained unaltered until the revisions of June 1980 when services 8C, 8D, 8E, 8F, and 8W were all discontinued. Of the other five, the 8 remained unaltered but the 8A and 8B were renumbered 81 and 81B respectively, whilst the two 8S were combined and were renumbered 82. The only other addition to the licence occurred in June 1984 when a school service numbered 90 was added to the licence. It ran between James Reckitt Avenue and the Bilton Grange High School. In July 1985 it was extended at both ends and now ran between Chapman Street and Preston Road (Marfleet Lane). The five services continued until July 1986, when they were discontinued in favour of the deregulation network and the licence was surrendered.
