I would like to know the difference between Yorkshire, Yorkshire Woollen and Yorkshire Traction, can you help please?
Allen Williams
Yorkshire and Yorkshire (Woollen District) were one and the same. Buses only had "Yorkshire" on the sides. They were based in Dewsbury and operated services out to Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield and Bradford - and all points in between. Like most early industrial region bus companies, their history dated back to tramway days inheriting routes from the Birstall steam tramway and the Dewsbury, Batley and Ossett electric systems in the late 1920s/early 1930s.
Yorkshire Traction were based in Barnsley, with routes extending to Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford and Doncaster amongst others. Similarly, they inherited tramway routes in the Barnsley and Dearne Valley districts in the early 1930s.
Both became part of the NBC group but eventually lost their identities during deregulation.

Yorkshire was the fleet name of Yorkshire Woollen District which ran services from Dewsbury to outlying areas and also to the major West Riding towns and to Manchester.
Yorkshire Traction was the name used, for most of its life, by the Barnsley based company which began as Barnsley and District. They expanded into Mexborough, Doncaster and Rotherham - indeed all of South Yorkshire not served by Doncaster, Rotherham Corporations and Sheffield Transport (and their various successors). They also had a major commitment to medium length and national coaching.
Hence, totally different companies at opposite ends of the old West Riding of Yorkshire.
