T Burrows of Wombwell

T Burrows of Wombwell

Hi I wonder if anyone can help with information regarding certain vehicles in the T Burrows of Wombwell fleet. Details required for the following fleet nos 56/59/63/68/69/70/72/74/77/79/80/84/92/95/101/103 Thanks

Geoff Clayton

Unfortunately I can only find info on certain vehicles and even that is by registration number rather than fleet number so your enquiry still has some homework to do, hopefully though this may help a bit:-

Reg Vehicle Body Seats Date New (chassis) Date Withdrawn
EWW 943 Bristol K6A Burlingham H61RD 1945 10/66
GYE 74/76 Daimler CWA6 Burlingham H61RD 1945 10/66
HGC 280 Daimler CWA6 Burlingham H61RD 1946 10/66
EYG 25 AEC Regent II 0661 Roe H61RD 1946 10/66
FWX 869 AEC Regent II 0661 Roe H59RD 1947 10/66
HWW 766 AEC Regent III 6811A Roe L53R 1949 10/66
NTT 664/9/72/3 AEC Regent III 6813A Weymann H56R 1952 10/66
PWY 943 AEC Regent V MD3RV Roe L53R 1956 10/66

The above vehicles were the ones that transferred to Yorkshire Traction when they bought the business of T Burrows, none of the vehicles received YTC fleet numbers or were operated by their new owner. They were moved down the road to YTC's Wombwell depot and I can just recall seeing them lined up on the scrap line there awaiting their fate.

Their Burrows fleet numbers had been (I believe) 50 / 52 / 55 / 60 / 81-83 / 89 / 104-107 but I don't have a match between fleet and reg numbers

GYE 74 / 76 and HGC 280 were ex London Transport D84 / 86 / 153

NTT 664 / 669 / 672 / 673 were ex Devon General DR 664 / 669 / 672 / 673

Good luck with the remaining vehicles

Andrew

Ever since I saw PWY 943 at Barnsley in 1965 I've always been fascinated by this fleet and have been trying to track down missing vehicles. In answer to Geoff's query I'll fill in as many gaps as I can.
56 YJ 4822 Albion Victor Brush C31C 1935 ex McIntosh, Dundee
59 KR 1737 Leyland TS2 Harrington C31F 1932 ex Maidstone & Dist
63 EYE 596 Leyland TS2 Duple C31F 1932 ex ?
68 LJ 7098 Leyland TD2 Brush L52R 1933 ex Hants & Dorset 908 ? or 968
69 BEL 392 Leyland TD4 Brush L53R 1935 ex Hants & Dorset 996
70 ANW 695 AEC Regent 0661 Roe H30/26R 1934 ex Leeds City
72 ANW 686 AEC Regent 0661 Roe H30/26R 1934 ex Leeds City 1951
74 MAY be LWR ??? as 75
75 LWR 188 AEC Regal IV Burlingham C39C is given as being 1 of 2
76 is a Crossley.
77? 79 DGX 360 AEC Regent 0661 Chiswick H30/26R 1936 ex LTE STL1796 4/53
80 AWY 215 AEC Regal 4 1936 possibly a rebody as this is No 29 renumbered.
84 FV 7397 Leyland TS7 1935 also a possible rebody as originally No 43. Re-engined with AEC 7.7litre in 1956.
92 By deduction I think this is TWT 50 Bedford SB Burlingham C??F in pics no fleet no is visible but this is the only fleet no. unaccounted for in 1957.
95 5681 WU AEC Reliance 2MU3RA Duple C43F 1960.
101 550 DWT Bedford SB5 Plaxton C41F 1963103 ??

I hope this is of interest (and that you can understand it) I'm still looking for fleet numbers 57/64/74/77/102/103 and were there any more fleet numbers allocated after 107?
Apparently the first bus was no 21 but then I have no info for numbers 22 to 25.
In 2008 I went by Thorne's to the Great Dorset Steam Fair and sat next to a chap from Wombwell who thought I wouldn't know where it was.........!

Burrows No. 59 (KR 1737) was new in April 1930 to Maidstone & District but was requisitioned during the War and passed in 1943 from the Admiralty to Belfast Corporation Transport becoming BCT No. 173 and was sold to Burrows in March 1949. It was withdrawn by Burrows in December 1954 and scrapped,

In response to Geoff Clayton's request, I have my self-compiled hand-written fleet list for Burrows from fleet numbers 1 to 107 except for 13 (never used) and 4/5/7/8/19. This is too lengthy to put on here but if Geoff is still seeking info about individual vehicles then I will be happy to provide what I have. Alternatively Geoff, if you wish to give Peter permission to supply your e-mail address to me I will scan and send my lists to you. Remember though that the list has not been independently verified by any other body.

I too have been fascinated by this fleet for some time, having good memories of them in Leeds. Is it possible to include the list referred to by Les in the relevant position on this site as it would solve a lot of mysteries and save a great deal of detective work! The photograph section on “Huddersfield Passenger Transport Group.....Buses of Wakefield” has a complete section on Burrows...photos galore!
Almost as fascinating as Ledgard!

Very fair comment John - Burrows and SL were both operators constantly alive with interest, and they worked in a tremendous range of totally fascinating territories and on services of every imaginable kind.
I do so with that they were both still with us - despite my happy Ledgard career I would gladly have done an unpaid trip or two from Leeds to Wombwell in a Burlingham rebodied Bristol K - yes, with high radiator too - I do have qualifications Mr. Burrows Sir !!

John- Thanks for the reminder re the Huddersfield sites which are always worth a look- not least because photos have little or even no description so they are a good SATS test of the knowledge built up on this site! People used to tell you of the bad old days before WWII when unregulated operators raced from stop to stop in areas around Barnsley. It could never happen again of course…. Always good to see some pics of Tracky whose photos are sparse and buses always look old. Fine collection of pics of buses they “acquired” by takeover which goes to explain why. There are, to be fair, one or two shiny ones, too.

I have supplied a copy of my fleet list to Peter for possible inclusion in the appropriate column but must point out that this has been compiled using data gleaned from many books, magazines and photo captions over the years. I make no claim that it is complete, accurate or definitive though wherever possible I have checked the content against lists published by the PSV Circle. I hope it is of interest to others but don't be too harsh with any criticism please.

Interesting in the later coaches is GNR 805D, Bedford SB5/Duple, only four months old when acquired, although, seemingly dealer-registered, it may have been a short-term hire to its original 'operator'.
There is no mention of 245 HWE on BLOTW, but the latter is far from complete, even in respect of 1963 vehicles, which is what 245 HWE would have been.
Former Devon General Regent IIIs 104-7 were 9.6-litre engined 9613As, as given by Les Dickinson, rather than 7.7-litre 6813As, as indicated by Andrew.

Thanks for the Burrows list Les! Greatly appreciated.

On the Huddersfield site, there is a photo of "Burrows No.1" which is a PLSC1 (or 3) Lion, with a non Leyland body. Probably not No1 at all, but I am just wondering where it fits in the super list sent by Les. The said list has made me realise that the Burrows fleet did have a certain "corporateness" to it, especially in the mid to late forties, when the 7.7 litre AEC engine seemed to be popular in the K6A and Regent 11 types supplied new, followed by STLs and Leeds Regents, and then London Ds. Les has put in a lot of work in here and it is great to see the fleet in tabulated format. Thanks again Les!
As Chris Y says, if only we could ride on these gems again! The shield radiator on a rebodied Bristol always did hold a character of its own, as typified by his Sammy submission of such a breed. A great pity Chris, that WYRCC did not embark on such enterprises by rebodying TD2s and then transferring bodies to later Ks, maybe the wartime ones. If only....if only! Mind you, WY would not have betrayed their instincts by allowing AEC engines to make any impact. Their 5 K6As were all converted to 5LW by 1949. Wonderful memories!

I see that I omitted to mention that, according to BLOTW, 109 (GNR 805D) was a Duple C41F-bodied Bedford SB5 new to Battersby's Coaches of Walkden in 3/66. (BLOTW actually gives the operator as Batterby, but the operator at Walkden was, and to this day remains, Battersby's).
245 HWE remains a mystery, on BLOTW there aren't even any 'near misses'.
