I live in Addingham, West Yorks. A friend, now long retired, used to work for Lister's at Low Mill, Addingham; the mill is now closed and converted to apartments! In his working days he drove one of the buses used to ferry the factory workers to and from work. His vehicle was a double-decker Leyland with registration plates JUB 29. He believes it was bought by someone in Bradford and made an appearance at the London to Brighton rally. I realise that's not much information to go on. Can you suggest any way of establishing whether this vehicle is still in existence and, if so, where it might be? Any pointers would be welcome.

To start things off, try putting JUB 29 into Google- there it is, on Flickr- is that old timer really it?

Looking at the DVLA website where you can find if a vehicle is still being registered, I tried with JUB 29 and it states that its last road tax expired at end of September 1979.There are lots of possible explanations of what has happened since, but it certainly appears that it is no longer on the road in its original state

JUB 29 is a Leyland Titan TD1, the 1928 chassis of which is ex Glasgow City Transport. It carries an Eastern Counties L27/26R body of 1932 which was fitted to this chassis in 1951. It is liveried as Keighley West Yorkshire K451. This bus was a regular on the rally scene for some years, but its present condition and status is not now known to me. Perhaps one of our contributors can give us an update. A couple of pictures of this TD1 may be found in the "Galleries" section of this website under "Halifax Parade 1968".

The bus is a 1928 Leyland Titan TD1 chassis with a 1932 Eastern Coachworks body. It originally served with Glasgow Corporation and its original registration was YG2058. The registration number was changed to JUB29 in 1944, possibly with change of ownership. The vehicle currently carries Keighley-West Yorkshire livery and is numbered K451 (JUB29). It appeared in the 1979 film “Yanks”, but has been off the road since 1981. However, it is currently being worked on with a view to it being roadworthy again this year (2011). I can find no details of current owner. A 1969 photo of the vehicle can be found here: http://www.mikesbuspages.com/ You will have to scroll down about 2/5ths of the page, though.

Does anyone know who currently owns JUB 29 and, if so, where they can be contacted?

This bus has been owned for a very long time indeed by Keith Jenkinson, best known today as proprietor of Bus Fayre magazine.

As far as I know this bus belongs to Keith Jenkinson the publisher of Bus Fayre magazine.

What a very complex history this fascinating vehicle has had. According to the PSV Circle Wallace Arnold history its original Glasgow number was GE 2407 - not YG 2058 - that was the number of the West Yorkshire Titan which originally had the present body - all very confusing isn't it?? JUB 29 was operated by Wallace Arnold from 1944 until October 1952 - but in September 1950 it was delicensed and was rebuilt with the body of YG 2058 and incredibly with chassis parts from that same West Yorkshire bus, returning to service with an 8.6 Leyland diesel engine until October 1952. Sold then to North the dealer it was immediately snapped up by Lister's Addingham Mills until December 1953 when it passed to a preservationist. It is totally beyond me how such complex "messing about" can have been contemplated when the dealers' yards were awash with complete serviceable vehicles of many kinds. Still, Wallace Arnold were renowned for wholesale ambitious rebuilding of an enormous number of their vehicles but that is another long long story.

Thx David/Philip for the owner info. And thx for your welcome extra information on JUB 29's history. I never thought of Wallace Arnold as being a bus operator, Chris Y! Could you expand a little on this aspect?

A brief reply to Chris H's further query on the vehicle, and Wallace Arnold activities. The Company was not a bus operator in the regular service sense during the reign of JUB 29. This was eventually to change quite considerably however in later years, when three well established operators (all of moderate size but very important providers) were acquired. HARDWICKS - a regular service from Scarborough to Hutton Buscel and Snainton etc.FARSLEY OMNIBUS COMPANY - a very busy service from Pudsey to Rodley, Horsforth and at peak times Tinshill. KIPPAX & DISTRICT - another extremely busy route between LEDSTON LUCK, Kippax, Garforth, Halton and Leeds Central Bus Station. The two latter facilities shared much of their mileage with Leeds City Transport buses, but somehow there seemed to be very little disharmony over the issue. On the Kippax service many passengers who could have used West Riding also rode. All three operators, after purchase by Wallace Arnold, had fascinating fleets consisting of "proper" service buses and at times converted coaches and a fair number of brand new Leyland double deckers of the PD2 and PD3 variants. The whole subject is a most fascinating one - especially to those of us who were occasionally involved on "detachment" from WA - and I've done duties on Kippax & District where the heavy passenger loadings rivalled anything that LCT and West Riding could hope for !!

If convenient could you please attach this view to my recent answer to the subject. It is a Paul Haywood picture of myself in one of the two Kippax and District Leyland PD2s after it had received attention at the main WA pits in Hunslet.

Chris Youhill's interesting post under JUB 29 in respect of the Wallace Arnold bus subsidiaries prompts me to submit this picture of Kippax Motors DUG 167C, which, with identical bus DUG 166C, was a Leyland PD3A/1 with Roe H41/32R bodywork. Kippax had four PD3s and one PD2 which, together with 2 Daimler CVD6 vehicles, comprised the fleet when Wallace Arnold sold their Kippax (and also their neighbouring Farsley Omnibus Company) operations to Leeds Corporation on 31 March 1968. The very last Kippax journey was run by this bus, DUG 167C. I am sure that Chris can tell us much more to this story.

Who had just driven it through a ploughed field, Chris?..... but notice the polished radiator, carefully painted front suspension & brake pipes, refurbished headlamps (I think) and fleet name in WA style: very nice.

I think I read somewhere that the reason WA sold Kippax and Farsley was because with the impending formation of West Yorkshire PTE, they expected that these businesses would be compulsorily purchased. Was this the case

Mr Turner suggests above that JUB 29 appeared in a London to Brighton vehicle event. I can confirm this, for I have found some television footage of said vehicle from the 1971 London to Brighton Historic Commercials Run.
The footage was filmed for the long-running Thames Television programme "Magpie". The bus appears at the 00:39 timepoint, and is on screen until 00:51........ it can be seen at this link.

With reference to the above bus appearing in the ITV schools programme 'How we
lived then'. I am sure this was a Yorkshire Television production called 'How we used to live'
Through Keith Jenkinson, myself and my Ford Thames 10cwt van, XUG 404 were filmed in
Otley, for an episode of the series, I think in the early 80's. Van since sold, where is it now?

JUB 29 in its present residence. Hopefully it will return to the rally scene in West Yorkshire soon.
