Ex East Yorkshire Renowns

Ex East Yorkshire Renowns

I would love to know what happened to the Renowns transferred from EYMS to Tynemouth. I guess it's too much to hope that there's one or two waiting to be discovered!

Six East Yorkshire Renown's were transferred to Tynemouth and District, GAT 817/22D; they were repainted in the T&D livery and initially numbered 330 to 335. They were then repainted in the abysmal NBC corporate image poppy red and later still in the even worse NBC version of T&W PTE yellow. In 1975, use of the Tynemouth name was discontinued and they were renumbered 3230 to 3235 as part of the Northern fleet. Unfortunately, I do not have any details as to when they were withdrawn, but as far as I am aware, none of them have survived into preservation.

Although personally preferring the delightful East Yorkshire Renowns in their original dark blue, primrose and white livery, Tynemouth's attractive colour scheme as depicted must surely run this a close second. When EYMS were finally forced into repainting their buses into corporate poppy red and white by NBC, the Renowns still managed to retain something of an air of dignity, at least until the paint dulled, which sadly did not usually take too long ("You will NOT use varnish as a protective topcoat!"). I've attached a shot of East Yorkshire Renown 815 wearing its new 'fashion statement' poppy red in the streets of Bridlington, while still looking quite smart.

The photo of 815 is Chapel St in Bridlington the chapel was demolished after the roof collapsed a few years ago. 814 and 815 were allocated to Brid from new and had to be taken off duties after evening peaks as they ran out of fuel until the fault was rectified. The fuel pickup pipe in the fuel tanks was too short. Very nice to drive as were the Bridgemasters

As you say, Ken, they were a nice enough vehicle to drive, although they were not everyones favourite. They came as part of what seemed to be a nation wide redistribution of fleets by NBC. In 1972, we lost 10 Daimler Fleetline's to East Yorkshire, and the six Renown's were a partial replacement, I seem to remember the other 4 that came were Alexander 'Y' type Reliance's from Venture. By the time the Renown's came, most of the routes to which they would have been ideally suited had been changed to OPO, but the Newcastle Coast Road routes, 3 - 5 & 11 were ideal for them, however, they were a bit tiresome if you got one on a heavy stop start route, which most of ours were.

Back in the mid-1970's, during my bus preservation period, I bought ex-Leigh rear-entrance Renown 28 (1975 TJ) from GM Buses. When I went to collect it from Leigh the depot engineer asked if there were any 'brews' (i.e. 'brows', i.e. hills in South Lancashirespeak) round where I came from, the only trouble with them being that, unless the tank was kept fairly full when climbing a 'brew', the diesel would run to the back of the tank uncovering the pickup tube and the thing would splutter to a stop, airlocked. I come from Halifax for goodness sake !
"Well don't say you haven't been warned, that's all" he said.
I kept it well filled and fortunately it never happened. It was a very nice bus to drive - distinctly different from the Regent V, despite its mechanical similarities, with subtle richer sound effects, and very stable road holding.

An unusual request has been received to see if anyone can identify the supplier/manufacturer of the distinctive moquette seen in the Park Royal bodied Renowns. The accompanying interior photo of GAT 819D is by courtesy of Graham Hill whose website is www.prv.org.uk. Can anyone assist please?

Just a suggestion John D, but I'd be very surprised if East Yorkshire, who are most helpful with enquiries past and present, are not aware even now of your answer - having very likely had a say in the choosing of the pattern.

Thanks Chris. EYMS will indeed be my next port of call.

Another contact for seat trim queries would be Holdsworths, a major player in moquette supply for the transport industry

EYMS also think it would be Holdsworths (now part of Camira Fabrics). Thanks guys.

My apologies, please accept my belated thanks to the contributors for expanding my knowledge of the demise of a large and important part of my childhood. Anyone have a time-machine in their shed?
