I came across an old photo of what I think is an AEC Regent 11 with a registration mark of MWL 977 on the wall at Pinewood studio . I would like to know if anyone has any info on her? My family own FUF 63 so have an interest in AEC.

I can't really help you with MWL 977, Garry, except to say that WL was issued by Oxford CBC, which may indicate that the vehicle was once owned by City of Oxford Motor Services, who were big AEC users. Maybe someone else can add more information. FUF 63, as, of course, you will already know well, is an ex-Brighton Corporation vehicle of 1939 vintage, fitted with a Weymann H56R body.

The registration number would suggest City of Oxford Motor Services which, despite the name, was a commercial company and not an Oxford Municipal Department.

A small extra point that Chris has brought back to mind, Garry. COMS, a BET company, had a distinctive livery: maroon, cream and duck egg blue. If the studio picture is in colour, that may help to identify the vehicle

MWL was issued in Oxford from June 1947 onwards and I think you will find it's actually a Regent III. I seem to think it would have been one of a batch with Northern Coachbuilders bodies.

As a matter of interest according to the Classic Buses web site MWL 997 not 977 was an Oxford AEC Regal III with Duple coachwork new in 1948. It was withdrawn in 1963 and sold to Hillside Coaches of Luton

MWL 977 was a Weymann highbridge bodied AEC Regent 11. Number 877 in the COMS fleet. I think Gary Brace would think it looked very similar to FUF 63 despite being 9 years younger, but then that style of Weymann body was very good.
