There now remains only a few services which do not fit conveniently into any of the previous chapters, by reason of travelling between two of the main thoroughfares already described but was operated on both licences as a through journey. These were the only cross-city services operated prior to the deregulation network of July 1986. There were two basic types, those which were given timed journeys in the timetable booklets and those which were only indicated by the presence of a faretable. Again there were two basic types of service. Mainly the services were intended for works, usually to Somerden Road or Council Avenue or for leisure usually to Boothferry Park. The reason for this is not immediately obvious, especially when it is realised that there were a number of scheduled services for Rugby League matches at the Boulevard or Craven Park, but the demand for each of these was from clearly defined areas. Craven Park was well served from East Hull and the Boulevard from West Hull and Bransholme. This latter may appear surprising but in fact, much of the Hessle Road area clearance was relocated to Bransholme, thus taking their support for Hull RLFC with them.
Boothferry Park, however, served Hull City AFC where supporters came from all areas of the city and therefore it was not practical to have to apply for special licences when two could be used in conjunction with each other.
These dual licence services were first shown in the timetable dated April 1967, and initially there were ten services shown:-
Longhill to Saltend Works | 7 (BH101/126) | / | 45 (BH101/94) |
Tweendykes Road to Boothferry Park | 33 (BH101/55) | / | 69 (BH101/111) |
Falkland Road to Boothferry Park | 43 (BH101/6) | / | 69 (BH101/111) |
Grange Road to Boothferry Park | 48 (BH101/6) | / | 69 (BH101/111) |
Ings estate west to Boothferry Park | 55 (BH101/112) | / | 69 (BH101/111) |
Ings estate east to Boothferry Park | 57 (BH101/112) | / | 69 (BH101/111) |
Barham Road to Boothferry Park | 58 (BH101/112) | / | 69 (BH101/111) |
Rokeby Avenue to Somerden Road | 66 (BH101/51) | / | 93 (BH101/73) |
Yarmouth Avenue to Somerden Road | 73 (BH101/56) | / | 93 (BH101/73) |
Willerby Road to Somerden Road | 81 (BH101/12) | / | 93 (BH101/73) |
From the October edition, two further services were added as under:
De-Gray Street to Boothferry Park | 26 (BH101/15) | / | 26F (BH101/15) |
Stalybridge Avenue to Council Avenue | 41 (BH101/6) | / | 73 (BH101/56) |
Additionally with the transfer of the Somerden Road route, the 66/73 and 81 were now linked to 47A on BH101/19. In the edition dated June 1968 the Rokeby Avenue to Somerden Road service was now numbered 63 on licence BH101/56 and the Stalybridge to Council Avenue service was renumbered 73A at the Hessle Road end and all Boothferry Park services were transferred to BH101/61 from BH101/111.
In October 1968 the Council Avenue service was renumbered 73B. The Boothferry Park services 33/69, 43/69, 48/69, 55/69, 57/69, 58/69 were no longer listed at this point, whilst the 81/47A no longer showed a return journey. From the September 1969, the 26/26F and 41/73B services were no longer listed, leaving only the 7/45, 63/45, 73/47A and 81/47A services in operation.
The timetable for March 1970 showed two workers services added. These were:
Ellerburn Avenue to Goulton Street | 15A (BH101/76) | / | 26 (BH101/15) |
Chanterlands Avenue to Saltend | 15A (BH101/76) | / | 45 (BH101/94) |
Like the Longhill to Saltend service, these two also operated only in the outward direction, buses displaying 26 and 45 respectively. Two odd routes were shown in the September timetable as follows:
22 | Ellerburn Avenue South to Coach Station (BH101/81) travelled by 20 route | (BH101/114) |
56 | Longhill to Coach Station (BH101/103) travelled by 58 route | (BH101/101) |
Also, a group of services were indicated by the presence of faretables:-
BH | (BH101/61) | (BH101/87) | (BH101/56) | (BH101/12) |
101/ | 69 Boothferry Pk | 71A Boothferry Pk. | 73B Council Ave | 80 Walton St. |
26 (15) | 9/70-3/70 | 9/70-/71
33 (55) | 9/70-3/70 | 9/70-/71
40 (55) | 9/70-3/72 | 9/70-/71
41A (6) | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
43 (6) | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
48 (6) | 9/70-5/75 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
48A (6) | 9/70-5/75 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
55A (101) | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
56 (103) | 9/70-5/75 | |||
57 (101) | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
58A (101) | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-5/74 | 9/70-/71 |
The outer terminal was the normal one for each route number at that time. It will be noted that Boothferry Park was served both via Anlaby Road (69) and Hessle Road (71A). The 73B covered workers services to Council Avenue for the Bird’s Eye factory from East Hull whilst the 80 covered services to Hull Fair from East Hull apparently only for 1970 as it did not appear in 1971.
The timetable for March 1972 was the last to show the Boothferry Park (69) services 26, 33 and 40 and the two 15A services 26 and 45 were not listed after the September 1973 edition. May 1974 saw the final listing of faretables for both the 71A and 73B groups along with 69 services 41A, 43, 55A, 57 and 58A, but the 26 and 33 were once again, listed, along with a new service from Bransholme 38F (BH101/130). In September 1975’s issue the 48, 48A and 56 made their final appearance but 33A (BH101/55) had been added in May. The 38F ceased to be listed after the September 1977 edition. At this point services still in operation were:-
7/45 | Longhill to Saltend Works | (BH101/126, /94) outward only |
20/22 | Ellerburn Avenue South to Coach Stn. | (BH101/114, /81) inward only via 20 route |
56/58 | Longhill to Coach Station | (BH101/103, /101) inward only, via 58 route |
63/47A | Rokeby Park to Somerden Road | (BH101/56, /19) both directions |
73/47A | Boothferry Estate to Somerden Road | (BH101/56, /19) both directions |
81/47A | Willerby Road to Somerden Road | (BH101/12, /19) outward only |
26/29 | Sculcoates Lane to Boothferry Park | (BH101/15, /61) |
33/69 | Tweendykes Road to Boothferry Park | (BH101/15, /61) |
33A/69 | Saltshouse Road to Boothferry Park | (BH101/15, /61) |
In June 1979 the 7/45 was renumbered to 7W and was now on licence BH101/126 only. After the revisions of June 1980, the 7W reverted back to 10W (BH101/105) and 45A (BH101/94), the three faretable services were deleted, the 22 was renumbered 18 and the 47A element of the 63/73/81 was renumbered 10X and transferred to BH101/105. In September 1981, the 10W/45A was discontinued, all the remaining services 20/18, 56/58, 63/10X, 73/10X and 3/10X, the latter having been renumbered from 81/10X in August 1980, continued up to the introduction of the deregulation network in July 1986.
