Chapter Eleven

Bransholme Special Services

Road Service Licence No’s: BH101/135, /136, /140, /141, /160.

In May 1974, a new licence, BH101/135 was granted for a circular bus service which traversed the main areas of Bransholme estate. It commenced and terminated at the Bodmin Road timing point and was numbered 99. There was a similar school service on the licence, but it was not known if the two services commenced operating at the same time. This ran between Bodmin Road and the Bransholme High School in Midmere Avenue and was numbered 99S. The following September, another licence, BH101/136 was granted for service number 98, which operated between the junction of Saltshouse Road and Holderness Road and the Bransholme District Centre. Licence BH101/135 also gained another school service in the form of the 95 which ran between Compass Road and the Kelvin Hall High School. The two routes had nothing in common and the latter was later shown on licence BH101/125, which leads one to surmise that the BH101/135 listing may have been a printer’s error.

At this point, the services to the Bransholme area were mainly extensions of existing services, mainly to Stoneferry or Sutton, and some more specialised routes for workers or school services were granted on the parent licenses, although, in some cases, the routes were getting quite divergent from the main routes. In an effort to sort these out, eight licences were granted for this purpose. Although some of these have already been dealt with, there follows a list of them all. Only licences BH101/140 and /141 have not been studied.

BH101/137 gained the 30D from licence BH101/129
BH101/138 gained the 1 from licence BH101/129
BH101/139 gained the 2 from licence BH101/129
BH101/140 gained the 3 from licence BH101/127
BH101/141 gained the 4 from licence BH101/127
BH101/142 gained the 85 from licence BH101/57
BH101/143 gained the 86 from licence BH101/129
BH101/144 gained the 89 from licence BH101/129

These transfers were all shown in the timetable dated May 1975. It is also interesting to note that the licence BH101/127 from which the 3 and 4 groups had come was derived from the mammoth licence BH101/105. Two services were gained in each case from BH101/127, these being, on licence BH101/140, the 3, Bodmin Road to Somerden Road and 3A, Honiton Road and on licence BH101/141, 4, Brook Street to Bodmin Road and 4A Brook Street to Littondale.

In the timetable dated May 1977 both BH101/140 and /141 had a variant of the 3 and 4 respectively in the form of the 3B and 4B, both of which covered journeys extended to Ladyside Close on North Bransholme. A service numbered 97 commenced in May 1978 which covered a route from Ladyside Close to the Bransholme District Centre, it was granted on a new licence BH101/160. In September the North Bransholme terminus had been extended to Cumbrian Way. The following September, both the 3B and 4B were extended also to Cumbrian Way and, additionally, the 3A was extended through Honiton Road to commence now at Bodmin Road, the route being otherwise unchanged.

The 1980 revision of the Bransholme services saw the end of both the 3 and 4 groups as well as the 97,98 and 99 services. The school service 99S on BH101/135 which remained became plain 99. Licence BH101/136 was surrendered (service 98) and also BH101/160 (service 97). Of the two remaining licences, the one which had held the 4 group was also surrendered although the 4B remained in an altered form on BH101/140. The latter licence now held the 33 group made up of five services as follows:-

33 North Bransholme to Somerden Road Replacing Service 3B
33A North Bransholme to Coach Station Replacing Service 4B (ex BH101/141)
33B Bodmin Road to Air Street Replacing Service 2 (ex BH101/139)
33F North Bransholme to Boothferry Park Replacing 80F (ex BH101/150)
33W Bodmin Road to Council Avenue Replacing 80 (ex BH101/150)

All the five services now ran via the same route through the estates replacing the varied routes previously operated on the varying licences. Two months later BH101/135 was surrendered as the 99 was discontinued at the end of the school year.

On the remaining licence, BH101/140, the 33F was discontinued in January 1981 and the remaining four were renumbered 40, 40A, 40B and 40W. The latter two now also commenced their inward journeys from Cumbrian Way, although outward services still terminated at Bodmin Road. The Air Street service, 40B, was withdrawn in May 1986, but the timetable listed two new sports services which would operate for the new football and rugby league seasons, these were 40C Cumbrian Way to Craven Park and 40X Cumbrian Way to Boothferry Park. These two were the only services remaining at the introduction of the deregulation services, the 40, 40A and 40W being discontinued in October 1986. The licence was finally surrendered as deregulation took effect.
